the history of hangar 16m

Designed in 1913 and completed in 1915, Hangar 16M was built by the Royal Flying Corps as part of Filton’s Aircraft Acceptance park and was later home to Bristol’s 501 Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force.

16M is the earliest building on the museum site and is described by English Heritage as “a rare surviving example of the earliest standard type of hangar”.

Until November 2018, the hangar was home to the Great Western Air Ambulance Charity, Now, with access to the hangar and building works supplemented by a generous $0.5 million grant from Biffa Award, we have begun the process of transforming Hangar 16M to allow public access for the first time in its 106 year history.
