Bristol Aero Talk: First Flight Over Everest

Tuesday, 22nd October, 7:15pm, The John James Theatre

On the 3rd April 1933 the first flight over Mount Everest was undertaken by David McIntyre and Lord Clydesdale (later the Duke of Hamilton) and observers Lieutenant-Colonel Blacker and Sidney Bonnett. Both pilots served with 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron and their flight was financed by Lucy, Lady Houston.

Colonel (retired) Meryon Bridges OBE MIMechE, himself a high-altitude mountaineer, will describe the expedition. This required many developments including a reliable engine able to operate at around 30,000 feet (supercharged Bristol Pegasus), lightweight oxygen equipment, special clothing and much more. The flight was undertaken using two Westland Open Cockpit Biplanes and recorded using fixed and hand-held cameras.
