Aviation Heroes Memorial Unveiled
Friends, families, and supporters gathered on the anniversary of the devastating Downend Crash of 1957 to pay tribute to the bravery of pilots and flight test engineers from the British and Colonial Aeroplane Company and the Bristol Aeroplane Company who gave their lives to achieve today’s high level of aviation safety.
It felt poignant as the new memorial was unveiled, followed by a moment of silence to honour the memory of these aviation heroes whose courage helped shape a safer future of flight.
This occasion was made possible by the efforts of Aerospace Bristol supporter and volunteer Bill Morgan who championed the search for families related to those who are remembered on the plaque. It was special to see the families together sharing the stories of their loved ones.
We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who attended, especially the families who travelled from near and far, members of our community, and our guest speakers MP Claire Hazelgrove, Chair of Aerospace Bristol Sir Iain Gray and Rev. Andy Carter from Concord Church. Thank you also to our Vice Patron Sir George White and Councillor Katie Cooper who unveiled the memorial.
The memorial plaque will serve as a lasting tribute to the bravery and dedication of the flight engineers and test pilots. A full list of names can be found here.
Their legacy reminds us that through adversity, we reach for the stars, Per Aspera ad Astra.
